Hello friends, how are you? Today we will talk about how to change affirmative sentence to a negative sentence. Let's get started.
Affirmative to Negative & vice-versa
Rule-01: When making an affirmative sentence negative, the negative form of the affirmative word in the middle of the sentence is placed and the negative word is preceded by 'not'. For example-
>Affir: I shall remember you.
Neg: I shall not forget you.
Rule-02: If there is 'every' in a sentence, to make 'every' negative, instead of every, There is no + the word after 'every' + but + the rest. For example-
>Affir: Every man wishes to be happy.
Neg: There is no man but wishes to be happy.
Rule-03: To make 'Everybody' negative, There is none + but + the rest instead of 'everybody'. For example-
>Affir: Everybody likes flower.
Neg: There is none but likes flower.
Rule-04: If there is 'only' and 'alone' in the sentence, you have to put 'None but' at the beginning of the sentence to make it negative. However, in the case of objects, 'only' is replaced by 'Nothing but' and in the case of numbers, 'Not more than / not less than'. For example-
>Affir: Only Allah can help us.
Neg: None but Allah can help us.
>Affir: He has only a few toys.
Neg: He has nothing but a few toys.
>Affir: Rahim was only twenty-five.
Neg: Rahim was not more than twenty-five.
Rule-05: If there is 'must' in the sentence, you have to put 'can't but / can't help' instead of must while making it negative. However, instead of 'must', 'can not help' is added to the verb 'ing'. For example-
>Affir: We must do it.
Neg: We cannot but do it.
>Affir: We must do it.
Neg: We cannot help doing it.
Some examples of rule (1-5)
1.Affir: Everybody loves him.
Neg: There is none but loves him.
2.Affir: Everyone likes to go a foreign tour.
Neg: There is no one but likes to go a foreign tour.
3.Affir: Only he can do this.
Neg: None but he can do this.
4.Affir: We must yield to our fate.
Neg: We cannot help yielding to our fate.
5.Affir: This was an extraordinary ship.
Neg: This was not an ordinary ship.
Rule-06: To make the affirmative sentence with 'As soon as' negative, 'as soon as' is replaced by No sooner had + sub + past participle form of the main verb + the rest + than + the 2nd sentence sits.For example-
>Affir: As soon as the manager entered the room, the staffs stood up.
Neg: No sooner had the manager entered the room than the staffs stood up.
Rule-7: Too ..... to add affirmative sentence to make it negative by putting 'so' instead of 'too' and 'that' instead of 'to'.
Structure: 1st sub + adjective + that + sub + cannot/couldnot + the rest. For example-
>Affir: She was too poor to buy a shirt.
Neg: She was so poor that she cannot by a shirt.
Rule-8: Rules for making affirmative sentences with superlative degrees negative.
Structure: No other + The next part of the superlative + given verb + as + positive form of superlative + as + sub.
>Affir: Raju is the best boy in the class.
Neg: No other boy in the class is as good as Raju.
Rule-9: To make the affirmative sentence with 'Always' negative, 'never' is used instead of 'always' and the opposite of the affirmative word is used. For example -
>Affir: I always support him.
Neg: I never against him.
Some examples of rule (6-9).
1.Affir: As soon as the manager entered the room, the staffs stood up.
Neg: No sooner had the manager entered the room than the staffs stood up.
2.Affir: Rahim was too honest to take the money.
Neg: Rahim was so honest that he cannot take the money.
3.Affir: I shall always remember your advice.
Neg: I shall never forget your advice.
4.Affir: Mutton chop was the cheapest dish on the menu.
Neg: No other dish on the menu was as cheap as mutton chop.
5.Affir: Rana was always punctual.
Neg: Rana was never late.
